In addition, this panel will focus on the growing need for information security departments to work closely with their legal counterparts, as well as the impact of information security on legal practitioner careers.

On February 7 at 8:00am, Jon will speak at RSA 2007 on a panel with Joe Burton and Erin Kennealy. The talk is titled “VoIP: Law on the Cutting Edge, Identifying your Rights and Responsibilities.”

VOIP represents a movement away from strictly private, and therefore tightly controlled, networks onto the public, and more open, internet. This transition will present the operators and users of these systems with a number of legal issues to resolve. Some of these issues represent new aspects of old problems, such as the scope and proper application of the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act statute; while others, such as mandating the use of encryption technologies for all VOIP calls, represent new legal challenges. This session will explore these and other related issues. This session will survey the cases and reported decisions involving VOIP in order to gain a firm understanding of the evolving law. It will also explore the statutes which are directly applicable to VOIP communications and analyze how they have been, and may be used in the future, and will briefly assess new legislation directed at VOIP communications. Finally, the panel will discuss methods of encrypting VOIP communications and the arguments for mandating the encryption of all VOIP communications.
